Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term « art deco » first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of Art Nouveau and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the US through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.Art Deco experienced a decline in popularity during the late 1930s and early 1940s, but experienced a resurgence in the 1960s with the first book on the subject by Bevis Hillier in 1968 to coincide with the Minneapolis exhibition and continued with the popularization of graphic design in the 1980s. Art Deco had a profound influence on many later artistic movements, such as Memphis and Pop art. Surviving examples may still be seen in many different locations worldwide, in countries as diverse as China (Shanghai), the UK, Latvia, Spain, Cuba, Indonesia, the Philippines, Argentina, Romania, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, Brazil, Colombia, and the United States (primarily in Miami Beach, Los Angeles, and New York City). Many classic examples still exist in the form of architecture in many major cities. The Empire State Building and Chrysler Building, both in New York City, are two of the largest and best-known examples of the style. Riga, Latvia has the largest collection of Art Deco/Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. History « The Musician », oil painting on canvas by Tamara de Lempicka, 1929. After the Universal Exposition of 1900, various French artists formed an informal collective known as La Société des artistes décorateurs (the society of the decorator artists). Founders included Hector Guimard, Eugène Grasset, Raoul Lachenal, Paul Bellot, Maurice Dufrêne, and Emile Decoeur. These artists heavily influenced the principles of Art Deco as a whole.This society's purpose was to demonstrate internationally the leading position and evolution of the French decorative arts. They organized the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art) in Paris which would feature French art and business interests The terms style moderne and art deco both derive from the exposition's title though art deco was not widely used until popularized by art historian Bevis Hillier's 1968 book Art Deco of the 20s and 30s. In the summer of 1969, Hillier conceived organizing an exhibition called Art Deco at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, which took place from July to September 1971. After this event, interest in Art Deco peaked with the publication of his 1971 book The World of Art Deco, a record of the exhibition.

ENGLISH BRIEF DEFINITION OF THE ORIGIN OF VINTAGE FASHION AND OBVIOUSLY VINTAGE WORD
Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1980 is considered vintage.
Retro, short for retrospective, usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion.
Opinions vary on these definitions.
Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. These are often old warehouse, or shop stock.
These items are usually referred to by dealers as « dead stock », « old stock » or « new-old stock » and can be more sought after and valuable than those that have been worn, especially if they have their original tags.
Although there has always been some demand for old and/or second hand clothing, the awareness, demand and acceptance of this has increased dramatically since the early 1990s.
This increase in interest is due in part to increased visibility, as vintage clothing was increasingly worn by celebrities, e.g. Julia Roberts, Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, and Dita von Teese.
There has also been an increasing interest in environmental sustainability in terms of reusing, recycling and repairing rather than throwing things away.
A resurgence of historically based sub-cultural groups like rockabilly and swing dancing has also played a part in the increase in interest in vintage clothes.
Other reasons that some people are attracted to vintage clothing include:
Unique or almost unique: most items were custom made, and others were manufactured in small quantities only.
Good quality:
They were designed to be worn for years and passed on to other family members, so they were made of robust materials, well cut and well made, with generous seam allowances and hems which allow for alterations and custom fit.
Fine materials: many of the unusual older fabric types are no
longer manufactured, or are no prohibitively expensive.
Value for money:
Garments generally sell for a cost far below similar new modern garments.
HISTORY:
An appreciation of the past, the roles of previous generations and the skills of respected designers.
Detailing:
Hand finishing, unusual buttons, hand embroidery, handmade lace, crochet, applique, beading and other techniques.
Style:
Vintage clothing has traditionally been the favourite of creative personalities because it offers an enormously wide range of imaginative styles.
Investment:
Some people buy to collect rather than to wear, and increasingly, good quality vintage garments especially items by well-known designers are sought after by collectors.
At times, the cycle of fashion design turns to history for inspiration, and garments closely resembling original vintage (retro or antique) clothing are manufactured.
An example of this is the simple slip dresses that emerged in the early 1990s and were based on undergarments of the 1930s.
These styles are generally referred to as « vintage inspired » or « vintage reproductions » depending on the faithfulness to the historical design, and serve as a convenient alternative to those who admire an old style but prefer a modern interpretation

Le vintage est un anglicisme appliqué d'abord dans l'œnologie pour parler de millésimes.
Rapporté dans la mode depuis les années 1990.
D'abord utilisé pour désigner les vêtements anciens de créateurs prestigieux « Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès… »
Le terme s'est étendu à toute pièce d'occasion, datant au plus tard des années 1980, et reflétant un moment particulier de l'histoire de la mode du xxe siècle.
La vogue du vintage est telle que le mot est désormais usité au XXIe siècle par extension pour toute pièce un tant soit peu RETRO.
Or, contrairement à la fripe où peuvent se mêler toutes origines.
Le Vintage est d'abord le reflet d'une authenticité, que ce soit par la marque, les techniques de couture ou les tissus employés.
La mode du vintage, débutée dans les années 1990, s'est développée mêlant fashionistas et antiquaires du vêtement.
Lors d'une vente aux enchères consacrée à Paul Poiret en 2005, les prix ont atteint jusqu'à plus de 100 000 euros pour un manteau.
Certaines grandes maisons de couture, attirées par l'aubaine, développent des collections de rééditions de leurs modèles « le smoking Yves Saint-Laurent, par exemple. »
Les grandes expositions consacrées à l'histoire de la mode ne désemplissent pas ,par exemple, Balenciaga, une rétrospective présentée par le Musée des Arts décoratifs à Paris de juillet 2006 à janvier 2007.
Cette vogue serait peut-être due à une réaction contre la massification de la mode.
Les principales sources de vintage sont les puces, les boutiques spécialisées et les ventes aux enchères classiques, ou en ligne.
Suivant la provenance, l'époque ou l'état du vêtement, les prix peuvent aller de quelques dizaines d'euros à des milliers.
Les pièces les plus recherchées sont les pièces griffées, ou antérieures à 1950.
