Lady Godiva

Lady Godiva
Lady Godiva was the wife of Leofric, earl of Mercia. The people of Coventry were suffering from high taxes, but their pleas were ignored by Leofric. Lady Godiva, feeling sorry for the people, persistently asked her husband to lower the taxes. At first he kept refusing, but he eventually gave in and told Godiva that if she would ride, naked, from one end of town to the other while the people were assembled, he would lower the taxes upon her return. He probably thought that she would refuse, but she didn't - She agreed. When she had completed the ride, her humbled husband rewarded her show of compassion for the people and lifted all tolls on Coventry. *There are a few different versions of the story of Lady Godiva's ride, but this is the one that I know best :)Nerys Jones' book, 'Godiva', builds the whole story to lead up to Godiva's ride, and the reasons for the ride, as well as the person who told Godiva to do it, are totally different to this version. --Original Artwork by: John Collier
